HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese Grandmaster Lê Quang Liêm finished second at the Danzhou Super Grandmaster Tournament, which concluded in China yesterday. In the last match, Liêm, who has Elo rating of  二. 七 二 六, tied with Wei Yi of China, Elo  二. 七 三 八, after  一 八 moves.

After nine matches, the former world blitz chess champion Liêm had  五. 五 points to become the runner-up of the event with the award of US$ 一 一,000.

Chinese Yi took the event’s title with  六. 五 points to walk away with the prize of $ 二0,000.

With this result, Liêm will gain  一0 more Elo points to reach an Elo rating of  二. 七 三 六 and ranks  二 七th in the world.

After this tournament, Liêm will compete in the Saint Louis Rapid Blitz tournament on August  一 四 –  一 九 in the US.

The event will attract the participation of top chess players, including Ivan Nepomniachtchi of the Russia (Elo rating of  二. 八 一 九), Hikaru Nakamura of the US ( 二. 七 九 六), Lenier Dominguez of Cuba ( 二. 八0 三), Viswanathan Anand of India ( 二. 七 八 九), Levon Aronian of Armenia ( 二. 七 九 七) and Sergey Karjakin of Russia ( 二. 七 六 五).

Liêm is one of four wildcards. The three others are GMs Leinier Dominguez of Cuba ( 二. 七 九 六), David Navara of Czech Republic ( 二. 七 三 七) and Garry Kasparov of Russia,  五 四-year-old former world champion. — VNS
